Junior Infants:
English:
·
Revision of 42 sounds and 26 letter names (speed is
important here)
·
Blend the following words: hen, ran, crept. test, rat,
act, sack, camp, hint and dent
·
Sight Vocabulary: get, this, will and when (Write out
these words on some card and put them into the word folder)
·
Jolly Phonics workbook pages 42 and 43. The child
should be well able to blend the sounds to read the words.
·
Letter and sound games from www.topmarks.co.uk (Free resource)
·
Continue to play games on the jolly phonics fun app if
you purchased it.
·
Daily reading (See websites from last week) and
writing (1-2) words as appropriate to your child’s ability and interest.
Maths:
·
The children will begin simple addition sums.
·
Tell your child all about the addition sign + and the
equals sign =
·
Explain that when you add two things together your
answer will always be bigger than what you started with.
·
Take out one cup – ask your child to count it – 1 now
get a second cup ask your child to count this cup – again 1. Now push the two
cups together and count again – this time there are two cups. This concept
although very simple to the adult is in fact quite difficult for children – practice
the above cup sum using, spoons, forks, plates, toys, sweets etc over and over
again. When you think your child understands this complete activity page 28 in
the maths book.

Surface tension: In physics surface
tension is a force present within the surface layer of a liquid that
causes the layer to behave as an elastic sheet. It is the force that supports
insects to walk on water, for example. Surface tension is caused by the
attraction between the molecules of the liquid.
The following are three experiments to show
surface tension.
·
Experiment 1
You will need: 1 bowl of water, some pepper flakes
(ground pepper) Some soap (washing up liquid is fine)
·
What to do: Shake pepper flakes on top of water. Place
your finger into the water – observe what happens (nothing) Now, dab some
washing up liquid onto your finger, place finger in water again and observe
what happens (pepper spreads out)
·
Experiment 2
·
You will need: glass of water, paper clip
·
What to do: if
you drop the paper clip into water it will sink – however if you can very
gently place the paper clip on top of water without disturbing the surface
tension it should float.
·
Experiment 3 ( this one is trickier and can take some
time )
·
You will need: a plate with some milk on it, food
colouring, cotton bud dipped in washing up liquid
·
What to do: pour a small amount of milk onto the plate
to cover its surface. Add one drop each of 3-4 different coloured food
colourings. Dip cotton bud into washing up liquid and place on the centre of
the plate.
·
After a while the food colouring should spread out to
form a pattern.

go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq1J-7-LVIo

making dinner, washing and cleaning, shopping and showing love.

English:
- · Read a column of words from the ‘Jolly Phonics word book’ each day. Page 37 and 38.
- · Read every day either a book from home or from the https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ website. Click on the class login button on the top of the page: CLASS NAME mrs Connolly PASSWORD Tracy (If possible, keep a record of the books your child has read)

On Monday, Write the final story in
the ‘writing workbook’ called ‘The bird.’ After this I would like your
child to write their own news story each day. Usually we start with
three sentences. Today is Tuesday. Yesterday was Monday. Tomorrow will be
Wednesday. (change days as appropriate) I would then like your child to write one
extra sentence each day. E.g. Easter is over or It is a sunny day or I drew a
picture etc. When your child has these four sentences written – they can then
draw a picture at the bottom of their written work.
-
Please remember that some children may find this task
difficult – therefore it is ok to write just one sentence each day or perhaps
just draw a picture and label it. Likewise some children may wish to write more
than four sentences – please feel free to edit the task as you see appropriate
for your child.
Maths:
This week the children are working on Patterns and Odd and Even numbers.
Discuss patterns with your child. Have they ever seen
a pattern in the environment? Zebra crossing, curtains etc. Explain that
patterns don’t always have to be in colours, they can also be in numbers or
shapes etc.
-
Look up the topmarks website. www.topmarks.co.uk In the
search engine, type in patterns and play some of the games.
-
Using paint, crayon or marker the parent begins a
pattern and then the child has to recognise it and then complete it.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8o71QI_E9I
look at this video where you can see how a teacher introduces the topic of odd
and even numbers to her class – have a go at doing a similar activity with your
child.
-
Then randomly call out a number between 1-10,
e.g. 2 ask your child to show you two fingers. Have they a friend ? Yes. Then 2
is an even number, now call out another number 5 – your child holds up 5
fingers – does each finger have a friend? No. Therefore 5 is an odd number.
Continue like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2dB-4OVL-I
this video shows you this activity.
-
Complete pages 118 and 119 in workbook.
Remember, most of the work on patterns needs to be done with physical
items. 2 people – 2 friends therefore 2 is an even number. One person – no
friend therefore 1 is an odd number. 3 forks only 2 forks can be paired
therefore 3 is an odd number etc.

WELL DONE ON COMPLETING ALL OF THE WORK SO FAR.
TAKE A BREAK NOW AND ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS.
Week 3 (30th March - 3rd April)
Dear Parents, here is the work for this week - some of the work is ongoing. As this is unknown territory for everyone we will all keep going as best we can. Please be mindful that all children learn at different rates. Whatever you are doing at this stage should now be in a nice routine for your child and also for the family situation. It is important to avoid putting pressure on your child with regard to school work. Remember, to take breaks from school work on Saturday and Sunday and also during the two weeks of Easter. The work below is a guide for you and your child, Please do not be under any pressure to complete all of it.
Please feel free to contact me anytime if you require anything. Keep safe, Tracy.
Junior Infants ENGLISH
*Continue to revise all 42 sounds taught - practice making words using these sounds cards - perhaps your child could think of two words associated with the Kitchen e.g. Day 1 :jam and cup, they could then orally sound out these two words, then find the sound cards to make these words, make the words and finally write out the two words on a piece of scrap paper, draw a picture of the words and stick the words to the jam and cup!
These are just a few ideas -
Day 1 words: jam and cup
Day 2 words: press and oven
Day 3 words: window and door
Day 4 words: pot and pan
Day 5 words: spoon and chair
For some children, one word may be enough to do each day while other children might enjoy making 3-4 words - you know your child -judge their level - this activity should be an enjoyable one! Have fun.
New words this week : do, did, not and like Learn these words by playing the board games already sent home. (write out these new words on card and add them to your child's word folder)

Thank you, to Bert Curley, Beekeeper and Hannah's Grandad for teaching us about bees. He explained all about the hive and the 50,000 bees living inside it. There is just one Queen Bee and between 20,000-30,000 worker bees, which are girls and the remainder are drones - the boys.
It can take up to 20,000 bees to make one teaspoon of honey. They say that bees flutter their wings 11,000 times per second and this is what makes the buzzing sound we hear.
Bert wears protective clothing when looking after his bees to avoid being stung. He also smokes the hive to help make the bees calm when he is checking the hive. There are 51members, of which Bert is a member, of the Beekeeper society along the suck Valley way. This was a fantastic learning experience for the children and linked in really well to our play theme - the garden centre.

By heating a solid (crayon) we were able to change our crayon, to a liquid and when it cooled down it returned to a solid once again and we had created a lovely picture.
We played with magnets. We learned that opposite poles are attracted to each other and will pull towards - join each other but like poles repel and pull away from each other. We tested lots of items to see if they were magnetic or not.
We watched how raisins danced in fizzy drinks but not in still water.
We also had lots of fun with balloon races.

When we rubbed the balloon on Abbie's hair it made her hair stand up. She looked funny!!!

We looked at a pumpkin in detail. We counted how many seeds were in its lid when we sliced it open. We counted the lines on the surface of the pumpkin and we investigated whether a pumpkin sinks or floats when placed in water.

We made rubbings of the leaves back in our classroom. It was loads of fun!!! We also visited the tree that Mrs Kelly planted last year for National Tree Day.
