Green School's EXPO
On Thursday 25th of February 5th and 6th class attended the Green Schools Expo at the R.D.S in Dublin. The Green Schools Programme is running for 19 years. This was the first national exhibition. It was organised by "An Taisce".
We got lots of new ideas there to do with litter, compost, recycling, energy awareness, water conservation, travel, transport and the theme of Global Citizenship.
We are working hard to achieve an 8th Green Flag for our school in 2017.
Our present theme is Global Citizenship - Recycling.
October Recycling Week
Marie Nicholson, Community Warden Officer came to tell us about recycling. Our recycling centre is in Gannons yard in Creggs. We can recycle green, brown and clear glass as well as aluminium cans there. At school we have blue bins to put in our clean dry recyclables - paper, card and plastic. We put our banana skins, apple cores and used tea bags into the compost bin. This compost is used to help the flowers and trees grow in the wild life park.Tree Day - Lá na gCrann
8th October 2015
We planted our Birch Tree in the Wildlife Park today, Michael O'Roarke (senior) came to the school to plant the tree for us. We also all planted daffodil bulbs in the containers in the park. It was a beautiful sunny day, we really enjoyed our trip to the Wildlife Park and are delighted Michael was there to help us.The birch is a native Irish tree. The leaves are good providers of seasonal colour, green for most of the year with a vibrant flush of yellow colour before shedding in late Autumn. The flower of the birch is a catkin this dangling cylindrical bloom is followed by winged seeds.
7th Green Flag
on Thursday 21st May we were awarded our 7th Green flag for generally maintaining a good, clean environment. We all worked together to make it our best application ever. The Flag was awarded to us in the Radisson Hotel in Galway.La na gCrann 2014
In October 2014 we celebrated Tree day at our school. We planted an "Alder" Tree. We invited a very special guest to plant the Tree for us Mrs. Mary Kelly. The tree was planted on the wet marshy side over the footbridge in the Wildlife Park. Everyone in the school also planted a daffodil bulb.Visit from the Fisheries Board
Arnod Donnelly & John Devaney were at the school they are from the fisheries board. They are fisheries protection officers. We will analyse a sample from our local river the Derryhippo river. It is a tributary of the river suck, which in turn is a tributary of the river Shannon, the longest river in Ireland. We took a "Kick Sample" from the river. We found may fly, shrimp ad cray fish. They feed on the Autumn leaves that fall into the river. Arnold and John also brought two eels from the Shannon in Athlone. by Evan DevaneyArnold giving us a presentation |

La na gCrann
On the 11th October 2012 a man called David Silke from Glinsk helped plant an oak tree for tree day. Trees are important to the earth because it brings in Co2 (carbon dioxide) and gives out O2 (oxygen). An oak tree is a hard wood. We are also trying to get our sixth Green Flag for the School. All of sixth class are the Green Schools Committee. Our sixth Green flag is about biodiversity. Biodiversity is plant life and insects and micro organisims. Between the school and the wildlife park we have a hedge row filled with millions of micro-organisms, mini beasts and creepy crawlies. That was the first thing we did. The second thing we did was we put a hedgehog box in the hedge. Hopefully for the future we will find a hedgehog in the home and it will hibernate over the cold winter months. We placed the hedgehog box under a tree so it will not get wet. We were also looking at the Derryhippo river at the wildlife park and thinking we could put a bridge across the river to make more room in the wildlife park. The last thing we did was put a pallet beneath the tree in the wildlife park to make a Bug hotel. - by Eoghan BrowneOur Bug Hotel |

La na gCrann
Today is tree day. We were planting an Oak tree. The Irish for oak is dair. David Silke told us about the oak tree. Fr. Hogan came for tree day. David told us about hard wood and soft wood. The theme for Tree Day is "If Trees Could Talk". by E. SmythWe went to the Wildlife park. A tree can live for over 200 years. There are 200000000 slugs in the wildlife park. We saw the river the river if over a foot high from all the rain. If you count the circles on the inside of the tree you will know how old it is. We brought the hedgehog house and we left the house there and the slug hotel. by S. Maloney
