5th & 6th
Class Work.
22nd June – 26th June
2020.
Hi everyone in 5th and 6th class. We
have entered the final week in this school year. It has been a strange ending
and not one we are used to. At this time, every year, we would usually be
enjoying our school tour, sports day, end-of-year mass and competitions. We would also be saying goodbye to our 6th
class and hello to our new junior infants. This unfortunately cannot happen
this year due to the Covid 19 restrictions. However, we must make the most out
of a difficult situation and remember to always be positive. We will get back
to normal eventually. The country has made great strides in containing the
virus due to your adherence to the restrictions. You made a great sacrifice so well done!
The school will meet with the 6th class before
they leave for secondary school in July to acknowledge their time within the
school with an official send off. In the meantime, we would like to wish them
the best of luck in the next stage of their journey and you are always welcome
within the school! You have been brilliant pupils and a joy to teach!
We wish 5th class a safe and enjoyable summer
holiday and hopefully we will see you all fit and raring to go in September.
This week we will taper off the work and give you a few
virtual tours to follow and enjoy. Keep using the Fallon and Folen websites as
they are still free at the moment.
Remember if you need any help or you have difficulty
logging into the websites please ring or use the school email creggsns@gmail.com. We are here
for you.
Thank your effort over this difficult period and enjoy the
break!

Science
Baking and cooking involves the science of substances’
reaction when mixed or put under the influence of temperature. This changes the
original make-up of the ingredients to create a whole new substance which we
eat for survival, taste and pleasure.
The challenge for the week is to make one of these dishes.
Think about what substances (ingredients) were used? Were they mixed? Did I add
temperature to the ingredients? (hot or cold). How did the original ingredients
or mixture changed after temperature was applied?

FAI
Homeskills
We have
just wrapped up on Week 7 of our FAI Homeskills videos. Every weekday at
11am on the FAI Grassroots Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages, a new skill is introduced by our
Ambassadors, current and former Republic of Ireland internationals, with a
demonstration of the skill by our FAI Development Officers, and current
Domestic and International players. Each day, we invite viewers to submit their
own video of performing the skill for a chance to win a FAI Goodie
Bag. The library of all 35 skills is available on YouTube: FAI Homeskills. This may be a good initiative
to implement for Active Schools Weeks to give
the kids ideas - all they need is a ball and a small area
of space.
FAI
Guide to Healthy Eating
We recently
re-launched our Healthy Eating Guide in conjunction with
SPAR to encourage parents and kids who are at home to eat
healthy and learn some new dishes that are favourites of our Men’s and Women’s
Senior International players. We have twenty recipes in
total and we put up three new recipes each week, there
are eleven up on the website to date. Teachers can let parents know
that all recipes can be found here: FAI Healthy
Eating Guide
No
Barriers At Home
In February
we launched the No Barriers programme, a joint initiative
with London to promote UEFA EURO 2020 and teach
children about players who have overcome barriers in their lives. There
are twelve inspirational stories, one from each of the host cities
of UEFA EURO 2020. We created all videos and resources in both
English and Irish for schools to use. It may be useful for 2nd –
6th class over the next month because we have updated the
programme to make it accessible for children at home and we are encouraging
them to upload their work, it’s also a fun way of keeping up
their Irish by listening to the videos. Here is the students
page: Student
Resources. Here
is the information on the programme: No Barriers At Home
We Will Draw
We also have created some fun colouring pages
of current Republic of Ireland Senior Internationals for
kids, teachers may want to send this as an additional resource to parents

Hi everyone in 5th and 6th class. I
hope you are continuing to stay safe and well. We are entering the last few
weeks of the school year and mainly at this time we revise and reflect on what we
have learned throughout the year. The final few weeks work will reflect this.
It is also the time of year where we lighten the workload and we concentrate on
activity, wellness, safety messages and tours. We will be in touch regarding
possible ways to end the year especially for 6th class. It is all
new and strange to us as much as it is to you during this time, but staying
safe and following the Government’s guidelines is what we need to do to protect
everyone. Remember if you need any help or you have difficulty logging into the
websites please ring or use the school email creggsns@gmail.com. We are here

practice and hone your Irish skills daily. You should be progressing through
your own personal goals at this stage on it.
Set up the account (it just needs an email address) with

Again speaking the language is the most enjoyable and
rewarding parts of learning any language. It can be frustrating at first but
the best way is to practice with someone else. Try speaking to some member of
your family in Irish for just 5 minutes using what you are practicing on
Duolingo. Keep it simple – Úsáid Gaeilge simplí; mar shampla Dia duit, Dia is
Mhuire duit, Conas atá tú, Tá mé go hiontach, Tá mé togha (sound), agus tú
féin?
Add this week at the dinner table “Ba mhaith liom……” – I
would like….. mar shampla “Ba mhaith liom bainne le do thoil” – I would like
milk, please!
Add to last week with a couple of lovely seanfhocail (old
words/phrases/wisdom). We will relate them to the Covid-19 situation and the
shutdown. If an adult asks you about the shutdown you can respond with
Is
ait an mac an saol – Life is strange!
Is
maith an scéalaí an aimsire – Time will tell
Is
aoibhinn beatha an scoláire – A student’s life is great!
Use them as they are lovely to mix in with a conversation in
English. It makes people think and ask what does it mean? You can impress them
while also they might learn it from you and pass it on. That is how we keep the
language beo (alive!). Speaking the language is the most important (níos
tabhachtaí)

History
Go to the website – www.logainm.ie
This is a website that has a database of Irish placenames
stored. It will tell you their proper Irish name and its meaning. It also deals
with villages, townlands etc. Type in your own address and see what your place
name means in Irish and then you’ll get a sense of why that name was originally
put on it.
For example, if you type in Creggs it will bring up Na Creaga
meaning rocks. The land may have been rocky at that time or indeed maybe to
describe the hills surrounding the village. These names of Irish places were
given hundreds of years ago to describe the area and give it a name. The name
was given in Irish as that was the commonly spoken language at that time. The
Irish name was then diluted following Norman and English Invasions throughout
our history to what we know it to be today but the original Irish name leaves
us its true meaning.
